Chat GPT is not allowing users to share their location which will result in more accurate local responses. The change will help and also hurt many local businesses who have begun to rely on the recommendations from chatgpt.
On March 26th 2026 Open AI announced a location sharing update. Open Ai spokesperson said: “Sharing your device location is completely optional and off until you choose to enable it. You can update device location sharing in Settings > Data Controls at any time.”
Why is This Important?
Previously users of chatgpt would rely on responses that were broad and could be relevant throughout the country or the world. Responses would be vague or broad. This location sharing will allow for specific businesses or results to be shared now the the platform knows the users location.
What Does this Mean for Businesses?
Businesses who are properly optimized should see an increase in traffic and customers from the Ai giant now that they have the opportunity to be seen in more local results. For businesses who are entirely online this could mean a decrease in their traffic and brand recognition.
