Why does Google have such a massive market share? They’re the best, because they created a brand, not a tool.
It all comes down to accessibility. At this point, Google is the main search engine for one of the two most popular operating systems for mobile devices, which is where most of the search comes from. You either have an iPhone or an Android. All Androids come with it pre-installed. So that’s where your search market’s going to be is on Google. Bing didn’t take off because the Windows phone never took off (despite the funeral that they had for the iPhone when they launched the Windows phone).
But while Google still hold almost 90% of the market share for search engines, I do think there will be a point eventually where something different will begin to compete as the older generations start to die off.
I think we’re more likely to see something like TikTok become a more powerful force for search than anything else. If my money was on something, it would be a social media platform becoming better with search. I am honestly surprised Meta hasn’t come out with a better search tool. It feels like they’ve had a lot more time than TikTok to make something great, but TikTok seems to be where the next generation is going for search inquiries.
The next generation doesn’t want to read answers, they want to see them and hear them. If they have questions, or if they want to research a piece of news, they go to TikTok, and TikTok’s search is generally pretty good about giving them relevant information that they can see and hear. This could be a major advantage to TikTok going forward.
And it’s crazy that Tik Tok already has 3% of the market share. You can even shop on there, because now there’s TikTok shop. You can get basically anything on there. When people want something, they look it up on TikTok shop.
