The Biggest SEO Myth We Still Hear All The Time (Hint: Its About Backlinks)

If theres one seo myth that just wont die, its this idea that backlinks are THE most important ranking factor, full stop. And look, backlinks still matter, dont get us wrong, but treating them as the end all be all is outdated thinking at this point.

We think social signals matter just as much if not more right now. What do we mean by that? Basically, active conversation about your business online, reviews being posted, people talking about you on social media, engagement happening in real time. Thats a signal to Google that your a real, active, legit business, not just a website sitting there collecting backlinks.

We’ve got a client, a dumpster rental company, that’s a perfect example. They started getting real leads before they had a single backlink built. Not one. Meanwhile if all they had was backlinks and no social activity, they’d probably be waiting a year or more before people organically discovered them.

The businesses that perform the best are the ones that have both, backlinks AND social signals working together. But if you had to pick just one to prioritize right now, we’d lean social. It just moves faster and gets you in front of actual people who are already talking and engaging, versus just sitting in Google’s index waiting to be found.

Another myth we hear constantly, and this one honestly might annoy people more, is the whole “follow these 3 simple steps and win at SEO” thing. Theres no magic bullet. SEO takes real time and consistent effort, theres no shortcut version where you do 3 things and suddenly dominate your industry.

So many businesses fall for agencies promising crazy fast results for a huge fee, and it almost always falls flat. A lot of the time these agencies are spreading themselves across dozens of clients at once just to inflate there own portfolio, then eventually they get bought out or they just take the money and dip without ever delivering real results.

If someone’s promising you guaranteed rankings in some crazy short timeframe, thats your red flag right there. Real SEO is a process, its always evolving, and anyone telling you otherwise is probably more interested in your wallet then your actual success.
